The Story of the Film: In this award-winning documentary, filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine relatives retrace the Triangle Trade, uncovering the vast extent of Northern complicity in slavery, and gaining fresh perspectives on the racial divide. Most white Americans have foresworn overt racism, but what remains? What are the structural inequities, and what kinds of racial baggage do many of us carry, such as the “racial stalemate” of black anger and white resentment named by President Obama? Premiered at Sundance, and aired on PBS/POV.
